Tally Form to PDF: Auto-Generate Designed Documents

Connect your Tally form once, and every new submission becomes a personalized, print-quality PDF built from your own template — no manual exports, no copy-paste.

Why there's no “download as PDF” button in Tally

Tally is one of the best free form builders around: unlimited forms, clean UX, and a generous free plan. But it's built to collect answers, not to produce documents. Submissions live in Tally's dashboard as rows of data, and the built-in export gives you a CSV — useful for analysis, useless when a respondent expects a designed document like a certificate, an assessment report, an intake summary, or a quote.

The usual workarounds each have a real cost. Copying answers into a Canva or Google Docs template by hand takes minutes per submission and invites typos. Stitching together an automation chain means designing your document in yet another tool and paying per task on every link of the chain. Neither gives you a system where documents simply appear as responses come in.

Diro takes a more direct route: it plugs into Tally's native webhooks. You design a PDF template once in a block-based editor, map your Tally fields to it, and from then on every submission fills the template and renders a print-quality PDF on its own. The setup below takes about ten minutes end to end.

How to turn Tally form submissions into PDFs, step by step

This is the exact flow inside Diro — no code, and nothing to install on the Tally side beyond pasting two values into your form's webhook settings.

1

Design your PDF template in Diro

Create a free Diro account and build the document your respondents should receive, using drag-and-drop blocks: headings, rich text, tables, bar/radar/line charts, images, dividers, and multi-column layouts.

Wherever a value should come from the form, insert a variable like {{name}} or {{score}} — these placeholders are filled per submission. You get precise, numeric control over spacing, sizing, and typography, so the output looks like a designed document rather than a data dump. Templates support multiple pages and standard print sizes like A4.

2

Connect your Tally form

In your Diro dashboard, open Integrations and paste your Tally form URL. Diro detects the form and reads its field structure.

Diro then gives you a webhook URL and a signing secret. In Tally, open your form's Integrations panel, add a Webhook, and paste both values in. The signing secret lets Diro verify each delivery actually came from Tally, so forged requests are rejected. This is the only step that happens inside Tally, and it takes about a minute.

3

Map Tally fields to your template

Match each Tally question to a field in your template — text, numbers, dates, single or multiple choice, and images are all supported.

If your document needs computed values, define them with formulas: AVG(Q1, Q2, Q3) for a section score, or (score - 1) / (5 - 1) * 100 to normalize a 1–5 scale to a percentage. Built-in functions include AVG, SUM, MAX, MIN, IF, ABS, and COUNT, which covers most scoring and quiz logic without any code.

4

Switch on auto-generate

Enable auto-generate on the integration, and every new Tally submission is captured and rendered into a personalized PDF automatically — typically within seconds of the respondent hitting submit.

Conditional blocks let one template serve many outcomes: show a different recommendations section depending on a score band, or hide an entire page when a question was skipped. One template, many personalized documents.

5

Download, share, or automate delivery

Generated PDFs collect in your dashboard, where you can preview, download, or share each one via a link. For workflows, the REST API lets you generate and fetch documents programmatically.

Already sitting on a pile of past responses? Export them from Tally as CSV, upload the file to Diro, and bulk-generate a PDF for every row in one go — the same template works for both live submissions and historical data.

Tally to PDF: comparing your options honestly

There are three realistic ways to get PDFs out of a Tally form. Each is legitimate — they just fit different situations.

Manual export from Tally

Fine for occasional record-keeping, painful for designed documents.

  • Free and built in — CSV export and a per-submission view are one click away
  • No new tools to learn
  • You get data, not a document — there's no designed per-submission PDF
  • Turning one submission into a polished document means minutes of copy-paste into Canva or Docs
  • Doesn't scale past a handful of submissions, and manual re-entry invites errors

Zapier + a separate PDF service

Works well if you already live in Zapier, but you're maintaining a multi-tool chain.

  • Tally has a solid Zapier integration, so triggering on new submissions is easy
  • Flexible — you can route the PDF onward to email, Drive, Slack, and more
  • You design the document in a third tool, with its own learning curve and template limits
  • Two subscriptions plus per-task Zapier pricing add up as volume grows
  • Multi-step Zaps break silently when the form schema changes, and debugging is on you

Diro's native Tally integration

Purpose-built for the form-to-designed-document path.

  • Direct webhook connection — no middleware, no per-task fees
  • Design-first template editor with charts, tables, formulas, and conditional sections
  • Auto-generates on every submission; bulk-generates from CSV for past responses
  • It's one more tool in your stack, and the free plan caps at 50 documents/month
  • Native form integrations today are Tally and Typeform — Google Forms works via CSV export rather than a live connection

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tally have a built-in PDF export?

Not for designed documents. Tally lets you view individual submissions and export all responses as CSV, but there's no built-in way to turn a single submission into a formatted, branded PDF. That's the gap a document generator like Diro fills: you design the layout once, and each submission renders into it automatically.

How do I connect Tally to Diro?

Paste your Tally form URL into Diro, then copy the webhook URL and signing secret Diro gives you into your form's Webhooks integration inside Tally. Diro verifies the signature on every delivery, so only genuine Tally submissions are accepted. The whole connection takes under five minutes.

Can I generate PDFs from responses I've already collected?

Yes. Export your existing responses from Tally as CSV, upload the file to Diro, and bulk-generate a personalized PDF for every row using the same template your live webhook uses.

Can the PDF include calculated scores or charts?

Yes. Diro's formula system (AVG, SUM, MAX, MIN, IF, ABS, COUNT) computes scores from your Tally answers, and you can visualize them with bar, radar, or line charts. Conditional blocks can show different sections depending on the results — useful for assessments and quizzes.

How many PDFs can I generate, and what does it cost?

The Free plan includes 50 documents per month with unlimited templates. Paid plans are Starter at $9/month for 150 documents, Pro at $29/month for 500, and Enterprise at $99/month for 5,000.

Can I generate Tally PDFs programmatically?

Yes. Diro has a REST API: send a POST request with a template ID and data, and get back a finished document. It's useful when you want to drive generation from your own backend or an automation platform instead of (or alongside) the native Tally webhook.
